What's Happening with Adoptions from India?

Both Canada and India are members of the Hague Convention on Intercountry Adoption. This means that all adoptions between the two countries must follow the Hague rules. One of the rules requires that before permitting intercountry adoption India must look for new parents at home in India.

However, the Indian Central Authority has interpreted this to include the placement of children with relatives living abroad. This makes a lot of sense and permits first-degree relative children under 6 years of age to be adopted by parents of Indian heritage.

On June 21, 2007 the BC Central Authority removed the suspension of relative adoptions from India. As a result these adoptions may once again proceed, but with caution. The BC Central Authority continues to have concerns and these are set out in their India Alert
