India

India is a member of The Hague Convention.  The Central Authority in India (CARA) has licensed Sunrise as an Enlisted Foreign Agent to complete Hague Adoptions from India.  The orphanages we work with are all CARA approved.

Families of Indian Heritage can qualify for this program if at least one spouse is a non-resident Indian who holds an Indian Passport (NRI) or is an overseas citizen of India (OCI) and can obtain a certificate verifying this status from the Consulate of India in Vancouver.

Under some circumstances a person of Indian Heritage (POI), who does not qualify for NRI or OCI status, can adopt older special needs children.

The Children

If you qualify for NRI or OCI the following children might be available for adoption:

• Children aged 4 months and up depending on the age of the adoptive parents and the availability of children in need

• Toddlers and school age children are available for adoption by older parents

• The placement of a male child cannot be guaranteed, as there are many more girls available than males.  Please be open to a child of either gender.

The Parents

• Adoptive parents must be between ages 30-55 years old to adopt. To adopt a toddler or younger age child, the combined age of parents must be under 90 years old, with preference for a maximum age of 40 for infant referrals. No parent over the age of 55 is eligible to adopt.

• Single women under age 45 are eligible to adopt from India, but there are a few additional documents required for your dossier.

• Couples should be married for a minimum of 5 years.  You can begin the paperwork process after 4 years of marriage.

• Same sex couples are not eligible to adopt as per the CARA Guidelines.

Approximate Waiting Period

• Proposal information on a child in need of adoption is typically sent to you within a few months after your dossier is complete.  However time lines are estimates and cannot be guaranteed.

• It can take up to five months or longer for the court process.  The courts are in different cities in India, each having a different time frame
